★ Musically Yours: “Salman Sir Said Superb”: Sohail Sen !!
Description: In the first episode of ‘Musically Yours’, talented music composer Sohel Sen opened his heart out about the songs of ‘Ek Tha Tiger’. Content Head Broadband Faridoon Shahryar chats up with Sen in his studio in Mumbai and also witnessed Sen play some melodies on his keyboard and sing along as well. So, what does he have to say about composing for a Salman Khan film? Must watch!
New Delhi: Music director Sohail Sen, who has composed for the upcoming Salman Khan starrer ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, says the actor has good sense in music and gave some valuable inputs regarding the film`s soundtrack.
“I am a big fan of Salman Khan. I am happy that I got an opportunity to work with him. He has a great music sense. He has knowledge and he gave me suggestions while I was working on the music of the film,” Sohail told reporters.
‘Ek Tha Tiger’ will be the 27-year-old composer`s second project with Yash Raj Films after ‘Mere Brother Ki Dulhan’.
“Yash ji has been like a father figure to me. The whole Yash Raj team is very warm. The benefit of working with them is that you get to access the best studios. I have a three film contract with them. Currently, I am working on Ali Abbas Zafar`s next. But it is not that I can`t work with other production houses,” he said.
Sohail debuted as a film composer with the 2008 film ‘Sirf’, which went unnoticed. Later, he gained fame with his work in ‘What`s Your Raashee?’
Asked what made him choose to become a composer, he said, “I come from a family of musicians who have worked in the film industry. I am the fourth generation of my family to step into the field of composing.
“My father, Sameer Sen (of the music director duo Dilip Sen, Sameer Sen) has always been a strong influence in my life and so was my paternal grandfather Shri Shambhu Sen`s singing,” he said.
Sohail also said that being new in the music industry; he prefers to work with new, budding singers rather than famous names.
“I like to work with new singers. I am also new here as compared to others. That is why I think even I should give chance to budding talent, the way others gave me. But that does not mean that I don`t want to work with established singers.”
Sohail said he likes experimenting with music and tries to add something new to each film he composes music for.
“All the films that I have done are different from each other. `Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey` had a old world charm, `Mera Brother Ki Dulhan` had thumping tracks. With `Ek Tha Tiger, I have tried to mix world music with commercial cinema.”
Salman Khan, who never read scripts and went with his ‘instinct’ has started reading scripts. The actor, who was known for doing films as favours to his friends has started looking at each an every detail personally. And the latest victim to his ‘eye (or rather ear) for detail’ seems to be the music composer of Yash Raj Films’ Ek Tha Tiger. Reportedly, Sohail Sen’s composition of a song in the Kabir Khan film failed to please its lead actor Khan, who immediately called up YRF scion Aditya Chopra and got his favourite musician duo Sajid-Wajid on board.
According to a source close to the film, Khan found a particular song composed by the young 27-year-old Sen rather ‘thanda’. The actor in fact, refused to shoot for it until the number was changed. “He did not have any issues with the lyrics. He just wanted the song to have more beats. He wanted it to be catchy,” revealed the source.
Prior to Ek Tha Tiger, Sen had composed music for Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and What’s Your Rashee, produced by Aditya’s close friend Karan Johar. Reportedly, on hearing the song, Khan immediately called up Aditya Chopra. “He called Adi in the middle of the night. It was past 2 am,” informed the source.
As a result of this late night conversation, Sajid-Wajid were called to tweak the beats of the song in question. Khan, who had worked with the composer duo in many films, was the one to recommend their name to Adi, revealed our source.
This is the first time Sajid-Wajid have worked with YRF. “It was a hush-hush job. Sajid-Wajid composed the beats for the song quickly. They re-recorded the song in record time. And Salman approved of it,” revealed an eye-witness from the Yash Raj studio, where the track was re-recorded.
Salman, who liked all the other songs composed by Sen in the film, reportedly, did not want one number to spoil the entire album. And thus, the song was re-recorded.
When contacted, Sen said that he was the one composing all songs for Ek Tha Tiger. “These are rumours. Yes, Salman did have an issue. But that was not with the tunes. He has a problem with the lyrics of a certain a song. Sajid-Wajid are not associated with Ek Tha Tiger,” said Sen.
A very close friend of Sajid-Wajid however, maintained that the composer duo were asked to add to the music of Ek Tha Tiger. “The entire thing was done secretly. They might not be given credits for it. And they are perfectly fine with it. They are very close to Salman and they will do anything for him,” added the friend. Kabir Khan remained unavailable for comment.
Everyone knows how big a fan Salman Khan is of musical duo Sajid-Wajid. And the fact that Sallu often refers his favourite duo of directors for music isn’t something new. And most of them oblige too.
Not Yash Raj Films, however. News is that recently when Salman, who was keen on working with the musical duo, tried to replace ‘Ek Tha Tiger’s’ pre-signed music director Sohail Sen with Sajid-Wajid he was tersely turned down.
Surprisingly enough when we contacted YRF, it turned down to be just another rumour. Says YRF spokesperson Rafiq, “That isn’t true. Sohail Sen is still doing the music for ‘Ek Tha Tiger’.”
Interestingly, Pritam was the first signed for ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, but the music director dropped the project in favour of ‘Dhoom3.’ Later Sohail Sen, who has a three movies contract with YRF, was roped in for the same.
However our source insists, “Salman just wanted Sajid-Wajid to do the score for the film and had started taking objections with Sohail’s compositions. Sajid-Wajid made some tracks for ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, but they did not get entry in to the YRF office.”
Not surprising at all considering YRF strict commitment policies. Seems the case of once YRF makes a commitment, YRF doesn’t break it for anyone, including Salman.

Music director Pritam Chakraborty was supposed to compose the music for Dhoom 3 and Ek Tha Tiger, both YRF films. But since the music of both the films needed to be composed simultaneously, it was difficult for Pritam to work on both the projects at the same time.
.
Since Pritam has worked on the Dhoom franchise from the beginning, Aditya Chopra told him to work on Dhoom 3 and leave Ek Tha Tiger. Pritam also agreed with Aditya’s decision.
YRF has now roped in music director Sohail Sen to compose the music of Ek Tha Tiger. Sohail Sen was the music director of YRF’s recent release Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. Aditya Chopra was really impressed with his work and asked him to compose the music of Ek Tha Tiger and he gladly agreed to do so.
There is no animosity between Pritam and Sohail. In fact Pritam was really happy that Sohail has been chosen to compose the music of Ek Tha Tiger. Pritam said, “I really like Sohail’s music and wish him all the best with Ek Tha Tiger.”
